Provox Medical Provox ActiValve Voice Prosthesis is designed for those who experience short device lifetime of Provox1 or Provox2 prosthesis caused by early leakage through the prosthesis due to excessive candida growth and inadvertent opening (and thus leakage) of the valve during swallowing or deep inhalation as the result of negative pressure building in the esophagus or thorax.

Atos Medical Provox ActiValve Voice Prosthesis is designed for users who experience short device life (less than 4 – 8 weeks) caused by early leakage through the prosthesis or negative pressure in the pharynx/esophagus during swallowing or inhalation.
Leakage through the prosthesis may occur because:
  • Candida overgrowth near the valve seat and valve flap, or on the silicone hinge may lead to incomplete closure of the valve flap, which causes leakage through the device. This is a normal event in prosthetic voice rehabilitation and an indication to replace the voice prosthesis.
  • Excessive Candida overgrowth on the silicone hinge to break and the flap to be ingested, which causes leakage through the device.
  • Stronger negative pressure in the PE-segment occurs during swallowing. To investigate this, trans-stomal inspection of the valve flap of the prosthesis should be performed during swallowing. If the valve opens during swallowing, negative pressure may be the cause of the valve leakage, a Provox ActiValve with a higher magnet strength should be considered.
