What should you choose? Nebulizer Mask or Mouthpiece

Nebulizer masks are useful when it comes to giving medicines to someone who may not be able to use the mouthpiece properly. A mask allows you to keep your hands free during treatment which is why they are preferred by many people even if they do not need them..

The nebulizer mask comes with an adjustable strap that goes around the user’s head to secure the mask to their face. When selecting a mask, make sure it “seals” snugly around the face. A proper seal will fit securely and comfortably around the nose and mouth with the bottom resting at the chin. Any gaps will allow medicine to escape and therefore wastage.

A mouthpiece attaches to the nebulizer well in the same manner as the mask does. It helps the medicine to reach directly into your lungs through your mouth. They are considered more effective in comparison to nebulizer masks.

How to Use a Nebulizer with a Mouthpiece?

The basic steps to set up and use your nebulizer are as follows:

  1. Wash your hands well.
  2. Connect the hose to an air compressor.
  3. Fill the medicine cup with your prescription. To avoid spills, close the medicine cup tightly and always hold the mouthpiece straight up and down.
  4. Attach the hose and mouthpiece to the medicine cup.
  5. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Keep your lips firm around the mouthpiece so that all of the medicine goes into your lungs.
  6. Breathe through your mouth until all the medicine is used. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. If needed, use a nose clip so that you breathe only through your mouth. Small children usually do better if they wear a mask.
  7. Turn off the machine when done.
  8. Wash the medicine cup and mouthpiece with water and air dry until your next treatment.
